Larkin Poe: The Roots Rock Band You Need to Know About

Hard-hitting blues meet jovial, country harmonies and playful folk lyrics in the unique sound of Larkin Poe. The two sisters, Rebecca and Megan Lovell, have a contagious enthusiasm for music that gets the whole audience smiling. They will be headlining at the 2019 Sisters Rhythm and Brews Festival, a blues celebration you do not want to miss.

The Roots Rock Music of Larkin Poe

Sometimes called “the little sisters of the Allman Brothers,” Rebecca and Megan write their own songs, taking inspiration from life, literature, and the rich history of American blues. They also bring back older tunes like Black Betty, Jolene, and a personal favorite of Rebecca’s, Preachin’ Blues. When Larkin Poe covers a song, they play with the harmonies and even the lyrics to create an all-new sound.

The band began in 2005 under the name Lovell Sisters. Rebecca, Megan, and their older sister, Jessica, set out to create a new bluegrass sound armed with classical training. In 2009, Jessica announced plans to get married and go to college, causing bittersweet disbandment. The very next year, the two younger sisters were back together as Larkin Poe.

In just 3 years, Larkin Poe released 5 independent EPs and 2 collaborative albums. In 2013, the band signed with RH Music, then proceeded to release one album per year. They have performed with Elvis Costello, Krisitan Bush, Keith Urban, and others. In 2018, Larkin Poe’s 3rd album, Peach, was nominated for Blues Foundation Best Emerging Artist Album award. They have also been nominated for Blues Music Awards “Band of The Year” in 2019.

Today, the band is four members strong. Rebecca is the lead singer and also plays electric guitar, acoustic guitar, mandolin, banjo, violin, piano; programs drums, and bass. Megan sings harmony and plays lap steel and dobro. Tarka Layman is on electric bass and Kevin McGowan plays drums.
